Venezuelan born Latin-Australian singer, Daniel Alejandro arrives in Sydney this week and he will be bringing his magical evening of romantic ballads, Spanish classics and contemporary pop songs to the Bondi Pavilion on the 17th.
Alejandro trained in Classical Opera with Steve Ostrow, the singing teacher who famously discovered Bette Midler, Peter Allan and Barry Manilow and for the past decade. He has travelled the world performing in concerts, operas and musicals. Highlights include Rio de Janeiro Carnival, Dead Man Walking the Opera, and Australian Idol 2009.
His fusion of classical and pop delivered with a spiritual sensitivity makes this a beautiful evening and with his live band, dancers and guest Ukrainian soprano Alya Meyer this will be a night not to miss.
Lets have a chat with him
What inspired you to create a solo show?
I was inspired to show all the different parts of who I am, the Latin dancing upbeat side and the more romantic side. It also gave me an opportunity to realize my solo album, El Amor, in a live performance.
What does it mean to you to be a musician?
To be a musician is to be alive. It is to be able to express my emotions and transmute them through my singing. My singing is my prime form of expressing myself and the soul of my being.
You recently released your EP with video clips for two of the singles. What was that process like?
It has been a long but very exciting process. The songs I have known since my childhood so the newer more exciting part was to bring them to reality in a music clip. I created the story lines for my music clips with my Director Raul Simao and I wanted them to be like small romantic movies. I am myself a filmmaker so it was important for me for them to be cinematic and I feel I achieved that. I had those stories in my head for years and manifesting them has been a true pleasure.
You were born in Venezuela how does that cultural background affect you as an artist?
I am part Ukrainian, part Castilian (northern Spanish) and Venezuelan with some German background… so a mix of things. I was raised in Venezuela and the US but have been in Australia since I was 18.
My cultural background informs my ability to feel highly sensitive Mediterranean songs of love and longing and intensity and my Latin upbringing gives me the love of all Latin rhythms and the love of dancing and party.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I want to perform more regularly in Sydney, I would also like to take a showcase show to the Philippines where I have many followers. Plus I am working on a new EP. So there are plenty of things going on.
So, who should come to see your show?
Anyone who loves rhythm and romance.
