Oooo it’s Ghost Jam

When the rating system is an Ooooo or Ahhhhh or Arrrggghh, you know Ghost Jam is gonna be a riot of a show.

Ghost Jam is a raucous show. Based on Lafcadio Hearn’s anthology of traditional Japanese folk tales, a series of ghost stories are reinterpreted and refracted through lens of the genius partnership of comedian Sean Murphy and percussionist Sophie Unsen.

Sean Murphy’s treatment of the show is perfectly choreographed and nuanced in his comic timing, quick wit and well-paced sense of theatre, that never lets the attention of his audience wane for even a moment. He commanded the space both onstage and off from the moment he stepped from backstage.

I took mine (7 & 11), and they both rated the show an “aarrrrgggghh!” which in Ghost Jamm language means maximum scare.

Sophie Unsen matched Murphy in both timing and energy, her seamless onstage use of percussion created texture and added skeins of wonder, fascination and hilarity to these traditional Japanese folk tales. So real was her ocean sounds that the audience had to look down to see if their feet were wet.

Enjoying the fortunate mid-week/school holiday timing, the Giant Dwarf Theatre in Redfern was packed to the rafters with children and their greatly entertained carers, which only served to heighten the energy and the noise for the neighbouring apartments.

Ghost Jam is hilarious and interactive, there is plenty of standing up, sitting down, yelling and clapping on cue in this show to keep all the people in the Giant Dwarf theatre laughing, oooing, ahhhing and stamping their feet.

This is one that I would go out of my way to take the kids to. I took mine (7 & 11), and they both rated the show an “aarrrrgggghh!” which in Ghost Jam language means maximum scare.
