Some of the local professional theatre gang are coming back to Kevin Sobels Wines after delivering Hunter Valley Summer Theatre’s six sensational shows there in late 2016. Director Annette Rowlison and actors Alan Glover and Kath Perry will present two performances of the romantic comedy Love Letters there on 10 and 17 February as well as one on Valentine’s Day itself at Wollombi’s Harp of Erin theatre restaurant.
A great Valentine’s Day play, Love Letters is an evocative, heart-warming and touching story as the two characters deliver funny and moving excerpts from the notes and letters they sent each other over their devoted but often distant lives.
New Englanders Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (Alan Glover) and Melissa Gardner (Kath Perry) are childhood friends whose love story begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, but unable to understand their true feelings, they live apart but continue to stay in touch throughout their grown-up years.
The play simply involves a table, two chairs and two actors reading from scripts on a bare stage. While this may make it seem more like radio than theatre, the emotional richness of the deceptively simple script means we see the characters travel through their longing, their love and their regret of the time and distance between them.
Since nowadays texts, tweets and superficial social-media have taken over our lives and letter writing has become a quaint relic of time gone by, this elegant drama takes us through added resonance and romance.
Reviewed by the New York Times as ‘Deceptively simple and quietly moving’ Love Letters was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Productions have had very famous American actors in the play since it was first presented in 1988. These include Julie Harris, Christopher Reeve, Elizabeth Taylor and James Earl Jones. New York Broadway’s 2016 show starred Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal.
Performances on either side of Valentine’s Day, 10 and 17 Feb, at 7:00pm at KEVIN SOBELS WINES, Cnr Broke & Halls Roads, Pokolbin AND on Valentine’s Day itself, 14 Feb, with pre-show dinner at 6:30pm at HARP OF ERIN THEATRE, Wollombi General Store, Wollombi, 2325.
